Elkhart, Indiana, offers a diverse array of attractions that cater to every interest, from art and history to nature and pop culture. Whether you’re exploring beautiful gardens, catching a show at a historical theatre, or geeking out at the superhero museum, the city offers a variety of experiences for all interests. Here are the 10 best things to do in Elkhart.
1. Wellfield Botanic Gardens

A true gem of Elkhart, the Wellfield Botanic Gardens is a 36-acre oasis featuring themed gardens, tranquil water features, and walking paths. You can explore the Japanese Island Garden (my daughter’s favorite spot!), Children’s Garden, and seasonal displays, making it an ideal spot for families, nature lovers, and photographers. The gardens also host events, workshops, and art installations throughout the year.
During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Elkhart Dahlia Society show and learned a great deal about what makes the perfect bloom.
2. National New York Central Railroad Museum
Step back in time at this fascinating museum dedicated to the history of the New York Central Railroad. You can explore vintage locomotives, railcars, and interactive exhibits that showcase Elkhart’s important role in the railroad industry. It’s a must-visit for train enthusiasts, younger kiddos who love train cartoons, and history buffs alike.
3. Midwest Museum of American Art

Located in downtown Elkhart, this museum houses an impressive collection of over 6,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The museum features pieces by renowned artists such as Norman Rockwell and Grant Wood, as well as rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
While the museum isn’t a massive one, what it does offer visitors truly makes up for its size. In my opinion, I’d visit with older children and teens, as there aren’t interactive exhibits to keep the little ones occupied.
4. The Lerner Theatre
A beautifully restored historic theater, The Lerner is the cultural heart of Elkhart. Catch a touring production, concert, or film screening in this elegant venue, which boasts stunning architecture and a lively events calendar. The theater also hosts community events and private functions.
5. RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum

Elkhart is known as the RV Capital of the World, and this unique museum celebrates the history and innovation of recreational vehicles and manufactured housing. Tour vintage RVs, learn about the industry’s pioneers, and discover how RVs have evolved over the decades.
Truth? As a gal who doesn’t RV, I wasn’t sure how well I’d enjoy touring the museum, but I love being proven wrong. I really did get a kick out of seeing the vintage RVs and moseying around the themed areas.
6. Elkhart Environmental Center

This nature center offers hands-on exhibits, walking trails, and educational programs focused on local ecology and conservation. It’s a great place for families and outdoor enthusiasts to learn about native plants and wildlife, participate in workshops, or simply enjoy a peaceful walk in nature. My favorite part of my recent visit was seeing one of the quilt gardens Elkhart is known for.
The Center isn’t open daily, so make sure you check the official website for current times.
7. Elkhart RiverWalk
Stretching along the scenic Elkhart River, the RiverWalk is a picturesque trail perfect for walking, jogging, or biking. The path connects several parks and downtown attractions, offering beautiful views and plenty of spots to relax by the water. My pick is strolling just as the sun goes down for gorgeous photos.
8. Ruthmere Mansion

Tour this beautifully preserved Beaux-Arts mansion, once home to one of Elkhart’s most prominent families. Ruthmere offers guided tours that showcase its stunning architecture, period furnishings, and impressive art collection. The mansion also hosts concerts, lectures, and seasonal events. On my visit, there was a morning coffee and live music event, which was really cool.
Another cool thing about Ruthmere is that you can visit two gorgeous houses with one admission fee: the Havilah Beardsley House is featured as well.
9. Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum

A must-see for comic book fans, this museum is dedicated to the history of superheroes in comics, film, and pop culture. Explore rare comic books, original artwork, movie props, and memorabilia from your favorite heroes and villains. The museum’s interactive exhibits make it fun for all ages.
Even if you’re not a massive comic book fan, if you’re a cartoon fan, you’ll still get a kick out of a visit as well. I truly enjoyed the walk through the ’70s cartoon memorabilia section and, man, did it bring back some happy memories of sitting on the living room floor watching them.
10. Island Park
Located in the heart of downtown Elkhart, Island Park is a scenic spot where the Elkhart and St. Joseph Rivers meet. The park features walking paths, picnic areas, playgrounds, and hosts community events and festivals throughout the year. It’s an ideal place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Before you visit, make sure to check out the events, as there’s everything from concerts to community gatherings held there.
Where to Stay in Elkhart, Indiana

For my daughter and me, staying at Hotel Elkhart was a no-brainer. Not only does it offer beautiful rooms and comfy beds, but the boutique hotel also has a covered parking garage, two restaurants, and a rooftop bar called the High Note.
During our visit, we indulged in brunch at Relish Cafe and tasty dinners at The Corner Bar—they make great mocktails, so feel free to ask what’s on the menu when you go!
