There’s something new going on in downtown Jasper that will make the courthouse square and surrounding area even more welcoming and fun. Last year, the city was granted status as a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA). That means that a person of legal age can walk with an alcoholic beverage in an approved cup while enjoying shopping, concerts, events, festivals and local tourism attractions. The goal of the social district is to encourage visitors to stay longer and linger while enjoying local businesses, events and community spaces - ultimately resulting in more revenue for businesses and a pleasant, positive experience for guests.
There are a number of downtown businesses where you can purchase alcoholic drinks that must be in an approved, marked cup. We stopped and did this on one of their Shop n’ Sip nights when area shops stayed open a couple of hours later, and a food truck was on hand. However, the DORA Social District isn’t in place only for such events. It’s something that is offered daily from noon to 9 p.m. within a specific boundary surrounding the courthouse square.
The downtown square is so charming, with a historic theatre and quaint shops, and each corner of the square has a unique feature, including a fire pit, giant swings and seating areas. You’ll also find a piano on the square open to anyone who would like to stop and play.
Check out these participating places if you’re in downtown Jasper to purchase your Social District beverage and then explore the downtown area.
