RedBull Global Rallycross will make its debut in Central Indiana at Lucas Oil Raceway on July 8 & 9.

If you wanted an insider's take on the best weekend of the year to visit Hendricks County, I would tell you it may not get any better than July 8 & 9.

Whether you like the sound of drumbeats while watching the splendor of a tribal dancer adorned in beautiful colors, beads and feathers or the roar of powerful engines revving to a crescendo as rally cars beat and bang their way through clouds of dust and skid along pavement before flying over a 70-foot jump, you can experience both here in Hendricks County that weekend.

The amazing part about this action-packed weekend is it has never happened before in Central Indiana.

National Powwow only occurs every three years and stands as one of the nation’s largest events promoting education and awareness of the American Indian culture. The four-day event, scheduled for July 6-9, introduces visitors to a cultural experience filled with traditional singing and dancers in full regalia, primitive skills demonstrations, a living history tipi village, ethnic foods, crafts, artisans, kids’ activities and so much more.

Set for a third consecutive time at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds & Conference Complex, 1900 E. Main St., Danville, and 17th time ever after being founded in Denver in 1969, this event draws 800 participants from across the country and another 2,000 visitors. Organizers also are expecting about 100 vendors at the event, whose wares will include American Indian jewelry, musical instruments, art and crafts.

Transcending what you might see in a museum, National Powwow XVII allows visitors to experience this culture in a way that can't be duplicated anywhere else. This is living history that you can be a part of.

Admission is $6 daily for adults, $3 for children ages 5-12 while children under 5 get in free. For more information, visit their website.

That alone would be enough for most weekends. But Hendricks County also will host an event that will make its debut in Central Indiana that same weekend.

RedBull Global Rallycross pits drivers from all over the world into a racing format that is as fun to watch as I'm sure it is to compete in. Practice sessions will begin on July 8 with the heat and feature racing occurring on July 9 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg.

So what makes this racing so much different than anything else you have seen in Indiana? It combines dirt and paved surface racing into one action-packed thrill ride that is sure to leave everyone on the edge of their seats, including the drivers.

In the infield, drivers will even have to tackle a 70-foot jump and maneuver through a Joker Lap that adds a bit of strategy to the beating and banging that also will occur.

It's an intense racing format that is unlike any other, and because it's at the Lucas Oil Raceway oval, you can be sure that anywhere you sit will provide a great view of the action.

So get that calendar out now and reserve July 8 & 9 for a road trip to Hendricks County. You can extend your visit by staying at one of our great hotels and find out where to eat and other things to do at VisitHendricksCounty.com.
