Summer’s the perfect time of year to enjoy some live music, and Indianapolis offers a number of great outdoor settings in which to do just that.
Since 2021, the Rock the Ruins summer concert series has brought talent to Indy’s historic Holliday Park to perform in the shadow of the property’s iconic landmark — a collection of columns, fountains and statues assembled by artist Elmer Taflinger. The “Races of Mankind” sculptures created by Karl Bitter in the 1890s and relocated to Indianapolis from New York City act as the centerpiece of the installation. An extensive revitalization project in 2016 breathed new life into the ruins, adding user-friendly features like benches, trees and gardens.
The expansive all-ages green space area behind the ruins lends itself nicely to a concert stage and open viewing lawn area where fans can catch shows by some of their favorite musical artists. The 2024 lineup includes a diversity of performers from Greensky Bluegrass, Amos Lee and Elle King to De La Soul, the Decemberists and Manchester Orchestra.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets to sit on, and although carrying in outside food and drink is not permitted, there are food and beverage vendors on site. Shows go on rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather.
If you go, be aware that paid parking spaces fill up fast. Limited overflow parking is available nearby with shuttle busses to the venue. Carpooling or ridesharing is highly recommended to a drop-off zone near the general admission entrance on Spring Mill Road.
Proceeds from Rock the Ruins concert events go to support Holliday Park and the Holliday Park Foundation. For more information, go to rocktheruins.com.
