I'm a big fan of Southern Indiana. Rolling hills, beautiful scenery, rural communities ... the list goes on. I had the opportunity to visit again recently while my husband did some work down there. I took full advantage of the three days and packed a lot in. One of those days was spent in Jasper. With the help of the kind women at the Dubois County Visitors Center, my daughter and I had a blast!
If you know anything about the area, then you have probably heard of the Schnitzelbank Restaurant or the "Schnitz" as the locals say. You see, Jasper has strong German roots and this restaurant is just one of many examples (another would be Strassenfest, but that's for another day).
Everything from the decor, to the waitress's uniforms to the menu has been influenced by the German heritage. I enjoyed the soup/salad bar for lunch while my daughter dined on the fried chicken (delicious). But I hear for supper you can't pass up their goulash or wiener schnitzel. Don't forget the German beer and wine!
We even were serenaded with a traditional German song performed by our waitress.
After lunch we headed over the Dubois County Museum. The sheer size of it immediately stuck out to me (it is known as one of the largest county museums in the state and I can see why!).
We perused the war, sports and farming memorabilia.
However, my daughter's favorite area was the kids dress up!
I highly recommend a visit, but be sure and check their hours. Since the museum is run 100% by volunteers (impressive) their hours do vary.
