Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG is a crown jewel in the stock car racing circuit. A Race Steeped in History:
The inaugural Brickyard 400 took place in 1994, a momentous occasion that marked NASCAR's arrival at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was a gamble at the time, venturing outside of NASCAR's traditional southeastern base. But the race proved to be a success, capturing the imagination of racing fans everywhere. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway itself boasts a rich history. Nicknamed "The Brickyard" for the original brick racing surface (retired in 2008), the speedway has been the home of the Indy 500 since 1911. Holding both the Brickyard 400 and the Indy 500 on the same hallowed ground puts the venue in a league of its own.
A Driver's Challenge:
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway offers a unique challenge for NASCAR drivers. The track's layout is different from the typical ovals on the circuit, featuring long straightaways and tight corners that demand precision and focus. Winning the Brickyard 400 is a prestigious accomplishment, a testament to a driver's skill and ability to adapt.
A Legacy of Great Races:
Over the years, the Brickyard 400 has delivered its share of thrilling moments. One of the most emotional and memorable moments in NASCAR and IMS history took place at the 2005 Brickyard 400, when Indiana native, Tony Stewart, finally won at his home track, becoming the first Indiana-born driver since Wilbur Shaw in 1940 to win at IMS. TONY STEWART is the only driver ever to have won championships in both the IndyCar Series (1997) and the NASCAR Cup series, capturing that prestigious title in 2003, 2005 and 2011. As a native of nearby Columbus, Indiana, Stewart achieved a boyhood dream by driving in the Indianapolis 500 five times, earning a career-best finish of fifth after leading 64 laps in 1997.
