Perhaps the most infamous haunted location near Richmond is the Randolph County Asylum/Infirmary. Some believe she is a former patient who met a tragic end within the asylum's walls.
Another chilling tale involves the asylum's morgue. It is said that the body of a patient who died under mysterious circumstances was left unattended for an extended period. When the body was finally discovered, it was missing its heart. Many believe that the heart was stolen by a malevolent spirit that still haunts the morgue today.
Forsaken Forest
Just outside of Richmond proper lies the Forsaken Forest. This sprawling woodland area is truly a must-do for those who love a really, really good haunt. It’s loud, rude, and above all else, hauntingly fabulous - exactly the way one should be.
The fun begins as soon as you enter the property compliments of the well-costumed scare actors. They provide a great backdrop for the forest setup when you finally are called to queue up.
What makes this haunt different from others I’ve visited is the fact are a couple of things. First, you’re not corralled like cattle and hurried through. The actors want you to take your time to get the feel of each of the themed scenes, all of which are well portrayed. If I had to pick a favorite section, it’s the swamp witch area.
As a gal who doesn’t scare, I love watching those who do. The folks at FF can spot them from a mile away and can push proverbial buttons like no others.
Wayne County Historical Museum Haunted House
If you're looking for a more controlled and entertaining haunted experience for younger kiddos, the Wayne County Historical Museum's Haunted House is a must-visit. This annual event features a series of spooky scenes and actors who will “scare” you out of your wits. The haunted house is designed to be family-friendly, and it’s fun to dress up and wander through the buildings.
The haunted house begins in the museum's historic building, which adds to the eerie atmosphere. As you make your way through the maze of rooms and down the stairs to the classic cars, you'll encounter a variety of not-so-terrifying characters, including ghosts, ghouls, and other supernatural creatures.
Outside in the year, the fun continues with walks through the buildings and cabins. In the end, kiddos get a bag of goodies instead of trick-or-treating throughout.
