In late 2023, a new visitor center and rest area opened along southbound I-65 in Northwest Indiana. The Kankakee Welcome Center is located in Jasper County at mile marker 231, just outside of DeMotte.
I’ve made three stops there since it has opened and notice something new each time I’m there. It’s a nice, modern space to work into your travels where you can take a walk, explore some art, let your pup get some exercise and learn a little about the local landscape and history.
The design of the center is inspired by northwest Indiana landscapes and the wind power industry. The building is meant to mimic wind turbines and blades and dunes in the brick and roof elements. Inside, blue glass represents Lake Michigan, and blue terrazzo flooring and tiles are a nod to the Kankakee River.
Scenic walking trails allow travelers a chance to get out to stretch their legs, take in some air and get some steps in. A path leads to a full-sized wind turbine blade that has been repurposed as a piece of art.
Also on the grounds is a dog park, a children’s play area, an adult recreation area and a pond.
Within the visitor center are modern restroom facilities and interactive exhibits featuring local attractions, including Indiana Dunes National Park, the northwest Indiana steel industry, Meadow Lakes Wind Farm and Purdue University astronauts. A canopy of monarch butterflies hangs from the ceiling and a heard buffalo sculptures lines the space.
Grab a snack from the vending area or pack a picnic and make stop here. A covered pavilion area will keep you shaded and dry if it happens to rain.
If you're on a road trip heading south on I-65, this is an ideal stop for a break from driving, a walk, a restroom visit, a snack or a little local learning.
