Wilstem Wildlife Park in Paoli, Indiana, offers animal lovers a unique and memorable experience: the chance to get up close and personal with two sloths. These adorable, slow-moving creatures have captured the hearts of many (including my own), and Wilstem's sloth encounter provides a rare opportunity to learn about and interact with them in a safe and educational environment.
Curious to know what makes a sloth encounter at Wilstem Wildlife Park so fun? Here’s everything you need to know to help you plan your own.
First, Wilstem's encounters are designed to be intimate, allowing small groups to interact closely with the sloths. This personalized experience ensures that everyone has the chance to observe the sloth's behavior and learn about its unique characteristics. If you book one on a day where there’s no one else in the room with you, apart from the caretaker, you can even have a one-on-one experience with them.
Full disclosure: sloths are my favorite wild animal and I’ve been to several encounters around the country. Having written that the encounter at Wilstem is, by far, the most memorable for only good reasons.
The encounters are not just about petting a cute animal. Wilstem's sloth caretaker provides valuable information about sloth biology, behavior, and conservation. Participants learn about the challenges sloths face in the wild and the importance of protecting their natural habitats.
All interactions with the sloths are carefully supervised by Wilstem's experienced animal handlers. Their priority is the safety and well-being of both the animals and the participants. They will guide you on how to interact with the sloth respectfully and safely.
I also learned firsthand knowledge of how slow sloths move, and why they move so slowly. Information about their diet, and where they are located in the wild was highlighted as well. By educating the public about sloths and other wildlife, Wilstem contributes to conservation efforts. It raises awareness about the threats facing these animals and encourages responsible wildlife tourism.
Of course, a major draw of the sloth encounter is the opportunity to take unforgettable photos. Wilstem allows guests to capture these precious moments, providing lasting memories of their experience. During your time in the sloth habitat, you’ll be able to take as many photos as you like. Personally, my favorites are the ones with me holding “claws” or petting them.
The sloth encounter takes place within Wilstem's "Roos and Crew Barn," which also houses other fascinating animals, such as kangaroos. This adds another layer of excitement to the experience. Make sure you arrive early so you can tour the barn and check out the animals, especially during the baby animal season if any mamas have delivered.
This has to be written: Wilstem Wildlife Park emphasizes the importance of animal welfare. It provides a safe and enriching environment for their animals, ensuring that they receive proper care and attention.
Due to the popularity of the sloth encounter, it is highly recommended to book your tickets in advance. This will ensure that you secure your spot and avoid disappointment. There are walk-up tickets, however, but do yourself a favor and lock down a session well ahead of time.
Wilstem Wildlife Park has specific schedules for their animal encounters (it also offers elephant, giraffe, and otter encounters), so be sure to check the website or contact them directly for the most up-to-date information.
