Wilstem Wildlife Park in Paoli, Indiana, has become a destination for those seeking unique animal encounters, and their otter experience is proving to be a delightful highlight. The park's otter encounter offers a chance to engage with these playful and intelligent creatures, providing an educational and entertaining experience for visitors.
Ready to learn all about the otter encounters at Wilstem Wildlife Park so you can plan one for yourself? Let’s go!
Wilstem's otter encounter features Asian small-clawed otters, the smallest otter species in the world. These otters are known for their social nature and their nimble, dexterous paws. I have had a couple of otter encounters at Wilstem, one when they were just babies. I adore seeing them grow up and thrive.
The encounter is designed to be more than just observation. Wilstem's knowledgeable staff provides valuable information about otter behavior, habitat, and conservation. Participants learn about the unique characteristics of Asian small-clawed otters and the challenges they face in the wild.
The main reason for anyone booking an encounter is the opportunity to get up close to the otters. This allows visitors to observe their playful antics and appreciate their unique features. When I write playful, I mean playful! They're constantly on the move, engaging with each other, and making noise. I loved it all!
All interactions with the otters are carefully supervised by Wilstem Wildlife Park's experienced animal handlers. This ensures the safety and well-being of both the animals and the participants.
The staff will share fascinating facts about otter behavior, including their social structure, hunting techniques, and communication methods. Additionally, you’ll get to feed them via a long stick as you won’t be able to handle them for safety.
There is one thing I have to mention because it’s the proverbial elephant in the room. Before you enter the otter habitat, you’re given a warning of the musky scent the otters emit. I prepared myself for it ahead of time, but you truly can’t until you’ve smelled it for yourself. A natural scent for the otters, it can be very overwhelming!
You’re allowed to capture memorable moments with these adorable creatures, happily. Wilstem allows visitors to take photos, providing lasting memories of their otter encounter. You won’t have photos of you and the otters as, again, you won’t be touching them, though.
Full disclosure: the otters are fast! I managed to take only a couple of photos (they're above), but I had better luck with video.
Along with the otter encounter, participants also gain access to the Roos & Crew barn. This allows for even more animal-viewing experiences, including kangaroos. Make sure you arrive early so you’ll have time to explore before your session.
Wilstem Wildlife Park prioritizes the health and well-being of its animals. They provide a safe and enriching environment, ensuring that the otters receive proper care and attention.
By offering interactive animal encounters, Wilstem aims to educate the public about wildlife conservation. They hope to inspire visitors to appreciate and protect these incredible animals.
Due to the popularity of the otter encounter, it is highly recommended to make reservations in advance.
It is important to note that Wilstem does have age restrictions for the otter encounters. Children must be 16 years old and accompanied by an adult at least 18 years of age. If you have questions, check the website or call the park directly.
Additionally, make sure you verify the encounter schedule on Wilstem's website or by contacting the park.
Wilstem Wildlife Park offers a variety of other animal encounters, including giraffe encounters, elephant encounters (I attended the elephant spa day encounter and it was amazing!), and a drive-thru safari. If you’re making a full day of it, consider combining multiple experiences for a full day of wildlife adventure!
