Years ago when my taking my son to a travel soccer match in Chesterton on a Saturday morning, I learned that there was a market nearby. I fell in love with it instantly and over the years have revisited many times to see some of my favorite vendors, shop for everything from plants to jewelry to baked goods to clothing to snacks and more and just take in the vibes of this charming market located in downtown Chesterton each Saturday from the beginning of May through the end of October with live entertainment and around 90 booths to browse.

Where is it?

The Chesterton European Market, which is organized by the Duneland Chamber, takes place at Thomas Centennial Park at Broadway and Third Streets and along the surrounding streets. It’s just two miles south of the Indiana Dunes State Park, and vendors come from across Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, making for a great variety of products. The market takes place from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Among the items you’ll find are artisan breads and pastries, boutique creamery cheeses, ethnic foods, spices, oils, clothing, accessories, jewelry, artisan-made pieces, dishes, plants, farm-fresh produce, eggs, coffee, sauces, seafood, meats, flowers and more. There are also several food vendors and a rotating group of musicians who play at each market.

Explore the Market

If you go, plan to spend a couple hours just making your way through the aisles, but also plan for a little time to explore downtown Chesterton, as well. On my last couple visits, we’ve taken a break at 219 Taproom, which sits right behind some of the vendor tents and has a nice patio. Not only can you swing in there to try some great local craft beers, but they also have breakfast and mimosa on market days. There’s a nice selection of unique breakfast items and they also have a mimosa flight that includes four different varieties. Other fun food stops nearby are Octave Grill, Ivy’s Bohemia House and Peggy Sue’s Diner
