Things to do in Hamilton County Indiana
About This Road Trip
From the Old Days to Today
It’s the 1800s at Conner Prairie, and families love the many ways to explore this interactive history park. There’s the 1836 Prairietown, where you can visit with residents and attend a one-room schoolhouse. Soar high above the area on the 1859 Balloon Voyage, a tethered, helium-filled balloon that gives you a view all the way to downtown Indianapolis on a clear day. You can also check out the farm animals, play on the four-story Treetop Outpost or even take your part in the 1863 Civil War Journey. In downtown Carmel, check out seven rooms of dollhouses and vignettes at the Museum of Miniature Houses and browse Carmel City Center for shopping, dining and special events.
In the Driver’s Seat of Fun
You’re literally in the driver’s seat at K1 Speed Indianapolis, an indoor go-kart destination featuring high-performance electric cars and a long straightaway leading to twists and turns that challenge even seasoned drivers. Check out the authentic racing memorabilia, including race cars and racing suits. There are also arcade games and air hockey tables to keep you active between races. Grab a different kind of driver at Topgolf, where golfers of all skill levels have a blast hitting microchipped balls from an elevated hitting bay to giant dartboard-like targets. You’ll be rolling for a strike at Pinheads Entertainment Center, featuring bowling and a luxury arcade.
Giddy Up and Go Outdoors
No experience is necessary to enjoy a trail ride at K-Trails Equestrian Adventures. You’ll be paired with a horse just right for you and will then be guided along the beautiful groomed trail through Strawtown Koteewi Park. There are even pony rides available for kids under age seven. For a beautiful ending to the day, choose the sunset ride. And that’s not all at Strawtown Koteewi Park — try the Aerial Adventure Treetop Trails, complete with zip lines and other challenges, or hit a bullseye at their state-of-the-art target and 3-D shooting range. Cool off at The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center, where you can scale the wall of the AquaClimb, try all the slides and surf the wave pool.
You can’t do a Hamilton County trip without hitting the little yellow house in downtown Carmel, home of Bub’s Burgers & Ice Cream. While burger enthusiasts try to conquer the one-pound Big Ugly Burger, there’s also something for everyone at this fun patio-enhanced stop along the Monon Trail. Another inviting place in downtown Carmel is Rosie’s Place, featuring homemade Midwestern fare made from scratch. Rail Restaurant in downtown Westfield specializes in local and artisan lunch and dinners, noting their food was raised in a barn. The generously sized desserts are definitely Instagram-worthy at Cake Bake Shop, featuring sparkling chandeliers, French-inspired decor and high-tea service.
